「海外大学字幕プロジェクト」は、日本語や日本文化を学ぶ海外の大学生らが、業界の第一線で活躍するプロの映像翻訳者から指導を受けながら、日本の短編映画に英語字幕を付け、世界に向けて発信していきます。
世界各地の大学生の指導にあたるのは、20年間に4000人以上のプロ映像翻訳者を育成してきた日本翻訳アカデミーの映像翻訳ディレクターです。 講義にはビデオ会議システムを導入。東京にいる講師と現地の教室をつなぎ、ディスカッション形式で翻訳作業を進めていき、各大学オリジナルの英語字幕を完成させていきます。その作品のPRなども学生自身で行い、最終的に、上映会で上映します。
“クールジャパン”には欠かせない大きな要素、「映像作品」。字幕翻訳には作品の内容に加えその背景にある社会や文化を調べる作業が必須です。参加する学生たちは一本の短編映画と対峙することでより深く日本を知り、その魅力や課題を世界に発信する担い手として、確実に成長を遂げるでしょう。同時に、彼らが翻訳・発信を手がけた字幕つき作品は国境や文化の壁を越えて世界中の視聴者に制作者の想いを届けるはずです。
本ページでは、翻訳作業を通じて日本を学び、世界に発信する学生たちの姿を追います。
The Global Universities Subtitling Project provides an opportunity for students of Japanese and Japanese culture to receive professional visual media subtitling training and the chance to create subtitles for a Japanese short film bound for a global audience.
Students from participating universities worldwide receive instruction from the Japan Visualmedia Translation Academy directors, who have taught more than 4,000 students over 20 years. Lessons will be conducted via a stable WEBEX connection (an online video meeting system). This system will connect the directors in Tokyo with the students abroad and they will work on subtitling in discussion style classes. Once each university finishes their English subtitling, students will also be responsible for the PR leading up to the final screening.
The use of video is an essential element for the effective delivery of Cool Japan contents. Visual media subtitling does not simply demand translation of the spoken dialogue but also research into the background and society that shape the film’s story. Participating students will be given the chance to delve deeper into the culture of Japan as they compete their subtitling work and through this research, find hidden mysteries and magic that can be expressed through the subtitles to a global audience.
This website will follow the students’ progress as they take on the challenge of subtitling short film.

English Title: Wannabeetle
あらすじ 本好きな高校生・コタロウは、学校の廊下で転校生・ユキコとぶつかったことをきっかけに、虫オタクのユキコに珍種のオオトラカミキリを探しに行こうと誘われる。実は虫が大の苦手なコタロウだが、ユキコの勢いに飲まれて虫取りに同行することに。虫に没頭するユキコと、それを支えるコタロウの姿を通して、豊かな生き方を問いかける。 After accidentally bumping into each other in a high school hallway, a shy bookworm is drawn into the world of a bug-loving newcomer, who soon invites him to search for a rare beetle. Though secretly terrified of bugs, he has no choice but to follow her lead. Through her fascination with insects and his quiet support, the story gently explores what it means to live a fuller life.

English Title: Take Off Your Mask, Ms. Miyazawa!
あらすじ 高校生・戸倉心は、同じクラスのマスクの女子・宮沢紗奈に一目惚れする。少しずつ距離を縮めて、仲良くなったのに、マスクのせいで宮沢さんの笑顔は見えない日々。そんなある日、心は友達2人の協力を得て、彼女のマスクを剥ぐ計画を企てる。滑稽なまでに初々しい少年達の行動を、アニメーションも交えてポップに描く。 It’s love at first sight when Shin Tokura meets Sana Miyazawa. As they grow closer, there’s just one problem—he’s never seen her smile behind the mask. With the help of two friends, he cooks up a scheme to uncover what lies beneath it. Blending live action and animation, the film portrays the awkward charm of youth in a playful, pop style.

Consists of 11 various faculties including Arts and Philosophy, Bioscience Engineering, and Medicine and Health Science. There are 41,000 students. Students majoring in Japanese study both modern and ancient language. Their studies also focuses on Japanese history, Japanese literature, and Japanese culture studies.

English Title: The Crimson Sky
あらすじ 環境の汚染で空が真っ赤に染まった日本。札幌から東京に進学した高校生・柏木糸は、閉塞感が漂う社会の中で友達と出会い、初恋を経験する。選べない世界で、それでも何かを掴もうともがく青年の姿を独特な色彩で鮮烈に描く。若干17歳にして数多くの作品を制作する監督が、大胆に、そして繊細に”社会の在り方”を活写。 In a Japan where pollution has poisoned the sky bright red, a high school student who moves from snowy Sapporo to bustling Tokyo finds friendship and first love amid a suffocating social climate. In a world where little can be chosen, the film follows him as he struggles to grasp something meaningful, rendered in striking, distinctive colors. At just 17, the already prolific director captures the state of society with boldness and sensitivity.

With a career in translating and English education, Mizohata teaches at an elementary school through the JVTA education program while leveraging her skills as a translator to support their visual media translation classes.
