For the basic skill building of J-E visualmedia translation.

The course aims to nurture translators’ specialized knowledge and media sense as well as the sophisticated skill-set encompassing creative linguistic ability. In follow-up to the Comprehensive Introduction course, students will learn the J-E visualmedia translation theory more in depth and more time will be spent on classroom discussions, exercises, and feedback on assignments and hands-on training sessions on few different industry standard translation software.

Starting in March, 2010

Jessica Renslow

Hailing from Gary, Indiana, Jessica Renslow has always been considered a “Jessie”. She graduated from Ball State University in 2003 with a BA in Japanese Language/Culture and Telecommunications Production. As a member of the Japanese Exchange Teaching (JET) Program, she was stationed in a remoter Hokkaido village for three years. Currently, she is the resident Translator and Production Coordinator for Studiopolis, Inc. She has worked on such shows as Bleach. Naruto, Naruto-Shippuden, Digimon Data Squad, and others. In 2007 Guerilla English (her bilingual book on teaching ESL) was released in Japan. It’s has been HAJET Publications’ top seller to date.

Yurika Dennis

Yurika Araki Dennis was born and raised in Japan. She taught English in high school and college in Japan before going to Texas to teach Japanese Language and Culture for cultural exchange program. She has worked in the entertainment industry since the early 90’s as a translator, subtitler, and localization producer. She has worked on Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, Great Teacher Onizuka, Lupin The Third Ⅱ, and many more anime titles.

Ken Duer

Ken has been an independent producer since leaving Warner Bros.Animation in 2001. His first independent project was supervising the production of ANIMATRIX for Warner Home Video, Joel Silver Productions, and the Wachowski Brother’s Eon Entertainment. Ken produced the English adaptation of the Lupin The Third for Japanese TMS Entertainment and Geneon Entertainment USA (formerly Pioneer Entertainment) and was instrumental in getting it programmed on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. Ken also produced the English pilots of GREGORY HORROR SHOW and DORAEMON for Japan’s TN Asahi. Ken recently finished producing the English adaptations for the second installment of Lupin The Third for Geneon Entertainment USA, as well as other titles for various Japanese companies.

Sean Myers

Sean Myers has been affiliated with JVTA since before the school established its campus in Los Angeles, while he was living and working in Tokyo. Sean has worked as a Japanese-English localization editor for many companies, including media productions and advertising agencies. Some of the projects he has translated have won awards at the New York Art Directors Club, Ad Fest, and the Cannes Lions. Currently, his day job is researcher at the Los Angeles bureau of one of the big three national daily newspapers in Japan, and in the darkness of night, he writes scripts.
